Clew Bay is one of Ireland's most beautiful bays and contains hundreds of small islands (called sunken drumlins).
Clew Bay SUP is owned and operated by Liam O'Malley. He’s been paddling since 2008. He had seen SUP on celebrity magazines but first tried it out while traveling the east coast of Australia and hugely enjoyed it, so much that when he returned to Ireland, he bought his first board an 8’6” Pocket Rocket. SUP surfing is Liam’s favorite sup pastime but he also enjoys all the other aspects, flat water, downwind, and open ocean paddling.
He started the SUP school to teach and share with people something he had gained a lot of enjoyment from while getting the chance to spend plenty of time out on the water in a stunning location.
The area is perfect or all types of SUP. There are flat water harbors, inlets, beaches and Clew Bay with its 365 small islands provide shelter and amazing beauty for an unforgettable paddling experience. Lessons and tours are held at various locations including Newport Harbour, Rosturk, Mulranny Beach and Furnace Lake.
The bay is also dotted with some historic buildings. Rockfleet Castle was home to the 16th-century pirate queen Grace O Malley. Burrishoole Abbey, built-in 1470 is now a national monument. The Newport viaduct built-in 1895 is an awe-inspiring structure and like the others are even better when paddling in their shadow.
Liam holds ASI Level 1 Enclosed Flat Water, Level 2 Exposed Waters and Level 3 SUP surfing instructor qualifications as well as water rescue and first aid certificates. He has a wealth of SUP experience and local knowledge.
