Hi Nelson, tell us a little bit about Coastline Algarve:
We are based in the Algarve region which is a southwestern area in Portugal. It has a lot of very good
beaches; the weather is nice almost all year-round. The area is known for its surfing beaches, nature
parks, and other beautiful spots.
I used to work for a surf school in the area for 10 years and then heard about SUP. It was growing rapidly
in the US so we decided to buy a few boards and see where it went.
We officially started the business in 2013 and setup near a small village of about 300 people Raposeira.
It is very nice and quiet for anyone visiting. We are a 5-minute drive from a couple of small towns nearby
as well.
We offer rentals, lessons, and our specialized cliff and cave tours, as well as surfing lessons. In between
the two beaches where we setup there are caves will 7 or 8 caves to explore.Tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience with paddleboarding:
My first experience being in the water was with surfing. I grew up in a beach town so I loved anything
that took me to the beach to experience the water and the waves. Even on every holiday we celebrated
we would make sure to visit the beach.
Paddling appeared later on, around 2007 or 2008. I first encountered it in France. I saw a few people on
the water and was curious as to what they were doing. And at the same time I was doing a Marine
Sports Degree in England and was looking for ways to get into doing watersports for a living.
By the time 2008 came, I was back in Portugal and found a SUP for myself. I started to use it all the time
and wanted to expand on the sport back home. I grabbed a few additional boards and studied to receive
a few certifications and officially started the business.
In 2015 I completed an ASI training and now offer trainings to customers looking to become instructors
in SUP in their country. I offer 3 workshops per year and people from all over Europe sometimes make
their way to my spot to get certified.Location Overview - Tell us about your water environment:
We have access to all bodies of water. Rivers, oceans, bays, lakes, whatever surface you are looking to
paddle, we have it. Mostly we stick to the oceans and bay, but we have access to a river that goes from
the beach. It’s very calm, no one is around, and it is a very relaxing experience. There is also a water
reservoir about 30 mins away that is also very calm. Sometimes we set up picnics for customers to enjoy
the day.
But we mostly do coastal trips that run in the ocean and bay highlighting our cliffs and caves.Services Offered at Coastline Algarve:
We offer lessons, rentals, extended guided tours, guided cave tours, cliff jumping expeditions, river
tours, and we do lessons and rentals for kids as well. Can you tell us some interesting notes about the area?
It is a very raw place. To get to our launch spot you have to drive 5 mins on a dirt, country road. The
beach is secluded and has a private feel to it. It can get a bit windy in there area so we often take
paddlers along the cliffs and to explore the nearby caves to make the paddling easier and more fun.
There is a lot of natural beauty to the area. The water is a naturally beautiful turquoise color, there a ton
of fish swimming underneath the boards, and sometimes on rare occasions we can see dolphins in the
water, as well as a ton of sea birds and other animals.
Plus, if you really want to see dolphins, there are a few companies offering boating tours guaranteeing
groups are able to spot some.
Oh and there is also a bird watching festival during the month of October in the area every year as they
flock to the shores.
But the town itself is very relaxed. There a people sleeping in their cars or vans with surfboards strapped
to the top as well as music being played on the street. It’s a good place to just hangout. Is Coastline Algarve seasonal or does it operate year-round?
We are open year-round. The climate is very mild. We hardly have any bad weather, it’s usually very dry,
with mild temperatures.
But our usual season runs from April to the end of October with a peak from June to September. But like
I said, we are open all year.Tell us about your favorite local food and why you love it:
A typical dish in the Algarve regions is called a cataplana. It’s like a stew, which is fish based with other
seafood like prawns, clams, it’s very good. Everyone who visits must try it.
But there is also a local, less expensive option near our launch spot called Rossio Das Eiras. It’s a small
restaurant but its convenient and they made great food.Where would you recommend travelers stay nearby?
There are a few good ones. I would recommend Memmo Sagres nearby but you can also find a few local
bed and breakfast places or an Airbnb options if that is what you are looking for.
Are there any additional activities nearby that you recommend?
The main one is surfing. It’s one of the most popular activities in the area. But there is also mountain
biking and hiking called Rota Vicentina and Via Algarviana which can be searched online. We have a cool
option of following a hiking trail on the phone, that leads you through the mountains which is also
marked with colors on the trail itself.
There are also dolphin watching trips and like I said before, in October there is a big bird watching
festival which is neat.Signature Services:
Our signature services are the coastline tours we offer. We take groups along the cliffs and explore local
caves. And we also involve cliff jumping for the adventurous called Coasteering. We will leave the boards
on the coast and climb the cliff, then we jump off. It is a really good time and exciting.Buddy Deal:
