Most locals know the SUP Shack in Santa Cruz Harbor, as it has become a "go-to" spot since it opened in 2011. Many people don’t know that the brains behind the operation are Trudie Ransom, who paddled a long way from her native England to bring the joy of stand-up paddling to Santa Cruz.

An entrepreneur at heart, Trudie is constantly on the lookout for interesting opportunities. From scuba diving in Australia to bamboo rafting in Thailand to swimming in Japan, Trudie's sense of adventure is pervasive. 

It was a trip to Hanalei, Kauai that got the Santa Cruz businesswoman hooked on paddleboarding.  She loved the sport and realized there was a business opportunity waiting at home in Santa Cruz.

Although SUP sales were flat at the Tri Shop, Trudie didn't lose hope. After keeping her eyes open for a new location, she learned that the small kiosk in the Santa Cruz Harbor was empty. After some research and meetings, she closed the TriShop and opened the SUP Shack in 2011.

After pounding the pavement, working hard and not giving up, Trudie has built a successful SUP business in the heart of Santa Cruz.

One of Trudie's missions is to get everyone to paddle safely. She has the biggest, widest boards available, so people can have fun and learn properly.
