Meet Steve Gurney of Surf Reston in Reston, Virginia

Hi Steve, tell us a little bit about Surf Reston.
Surf Reston is dedicated to helping people enjoy Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), the fastest growing paddle sport on calm, flat water, with attention to safety, fitness and the environment in Reston, VA a historic planned community outside of Washington, DC.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your experience with paddleboarding
I manage Surf Reston and hold a Level 2 Certification with the American Canoe Association (ACA). In the winter months, I operate as an AASI Certified Adaptive Snow Board Instructor with Blue Ridge Adaptive Snow Sports based out of Liberty Mountain Resort. Additionally, I also founded Paddle Polo, a patented product that enables paddlers to play lacrosse and other games on their SUPs.

Professionally, I'm the founder and publisher of "Guide to Retirement Living - SourceBook" a resource he founded over 28 years ago, and I also serve as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) School of Aging Studies.

Location Overview - Tell us about your water environment
Surf Reston operates on four calm, flat, powerboat free lakes in Reston, Virginia in partnership with Reston Association who own and manage the lakes. Weekly sessions held primarily on Thursday evenings with the Take a Break Concert Series, and Weekends at Lake Anne. Surf Reston paddles every other Wednesday at Lake Audubon, and once a month at Lake Newport and Lake Thoreau.

Services Offered at Surf Reston
All sessions are supervised by certified SUP instructors, in addition we offer SUP Yoga, Parties, Intermediate/Advanced, Whitewater Prep, and race training.

Can you tell us some interesting notes about the area?
Our primary location is Lake Anne, where we paddle down to Lake Anne Plaza an amazing European-Style plaza with shops and restaurants. Lake Anne Plaza is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Is Surf Reston Seasonal or does it operate year round?
We operate from April to October

Tell us about your favorite local food and why you love it
Nothing beats enjoying a beer overlooking the lake at our local nano-brewery The Lake Anne Brew House and bringing in some food from Kalypsos, Cafe Montmarte, or Lake Anne Coffee & Wine Bar!

Hyatt Regency at Reston Town Center.

Are there any additional activities nearby that you recommend?
You can take the Metro from Reston to Washington, DC for sightseeing, catching a Washington Nationals game or visiting Smithsonian Museums (all free entry!)
