Where to SUP in South Africa

SUP in South Africa

Do you want to SUP in South Africa but not sure where to go? Check out our Perfect Paddles Comprehensive Guide to paddling in South Africa!

...

South Africa might be the quintessential outdoorsman's paradise. It has everything. Whether you enjoy biking, hiking, rock climbing, and every watersport under the sun, the possibilities to enjoy time outside in South Africa are endless.

The country is, of course, most known for its surfing locations. No matter where you wander along the coast, you’re likely to find yourself staring down waves ranging anywhere from 1-2’ fun waves to overhead barrels. It’s a surfer’s dream.

And more recently, it has also become a burgeoning hub for the sport of SUP. With so many locations surrounded by water and wildlife, it was only natural the watermen (and women) population in South Africa began to incorporate stand up paddle boards into their quivers.

As SUP began to grow in South Africa, so did our awareness of the seemingly endless locations to drop in and paddle out.

Whether you are a flatwater fanatic, like to bounce around in some waves, or love the thrill of a downwind run, you can find it all in South Africa.

But with so many places to go, we realized there was hardly any organized information on locations pertaining to each activity. To remedy this situation, we created this comprehensive guide to South Africa where we separate some of the best launch locations into flatwater, surfing, and downwind runs…

In order to provide you with the map you need to have the best time possible on your SUP in South Africa.

SUP in South Africa

-Perfect Paddles Travel Brief-

Best Time of Year to Visit:

For generally good weather for whatever you want to do, the best time to visit South Africa is May through October, during the southern hemisphere's winter. Days are still clear and warm, with colder nights

Average Temperatures

Parts of South Africa see summer highs get up to 81 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius), with averages closer to 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius), while the mild winters produce average highs of approximately 63 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees Celsius). Of course, these averages change dramatically from region to region. Generally speaking, temperatures at the coast are more consistent throughout the year, while the arid and mountainous areas of the interior see the greatest fluctuation in seasonal temperatures.

Regardless of when or where you travel in South Africa, it's a good idea to pack for all occasions. Even in the Kalahari Desert, nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing.

Average Water Temperatures

Along with the average air temperatures, it’s also good to know what the average water temperatures will be when you visit a new country for SUP.

South Africa is unique. Even during the warmer months of the year, the water temperatures can remain quite cool. This will require you to bring your own wetsuit or rent one from a local SUP/surf shop.

To understand the thickness you’ll need, please refer to Sea Temperature for the current water temps in South Africa.

Seasons

For the paddlers in the northern hemisphere, it’s important to note the seasons in South Africa are the opposite of what you will experience. For example, during the winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it is summer in South Africa. However, we don’t want to totally fry your brain by trying to think about Christmas in the summer, so we should also note that South Africa is a large country. And with such a large stretch of coastline comes a variety of weather conditions year-round depending on your location.

Unlike other areas in Africa, where the year is divided between rainy and dry seasons, South Africa has four seasons - spring, fall, winter, and summer. Spring lasts from September to October, fall from March to May, winter from June to August and summer  from December to February.  And for most of the country, the rains come within the summer months, with the Western Cape and Cape Town as the exception.

  1. Surf Shack South Africa Penguin Tour: Cape Town has no shortage of stunning beaches and on our Penguin Tour you will get to experience a few of them. The jewel in the crown must be Boulders beach with it’s soft white sand, large granite boulders, dramatic mountain backdrop and turquoise ocean, home to the African Penguin. It is also the only place in the world that you can get a close up glimpse into their lives. Please do remember that Boulders Beach is a sanctuary for the African Penguin. Sadly the African Penguin has been classified as an endangered species and no close interaction with the penguins is allowed.

The Four Rivers of East London South Africa

East London is a city on the southern coast of South Africa that boasts some of the best beaches in the country. And it is the only city built on the banks of four rivers.

With such a location, it’s easy to understand why East London is one of the best places to SUP in South Africa.

The Buffalo River

You will first notice the Buffalo River as you descend into East London’s airport. It is the largest river in East London and home to South Africa’s only river port.

The Buffalo River is famous for being home to almost every type of water sport with four clubs centered here to celebrate time on the water: The Buffalo River Yacht Club (BRYC), the East London Ski Boat Club, The East London Yacht Club and the Leander Rowing Club. This means it’s also a great place to drop your SUP in and paddle around!

Follow the rowing club, stick to the shores, or forge your own adventure in the Buffalo River for an ultimate time paddling in southern South Africa.

This central location also provides plenty of places to eat and drink after a long day of paddling.

SUP in South Africa

The Nahoon River

From the Buffalo River, we land at our next location in the Nahoon. This spot is easy to find. Simply follow the sea from the Buffalo River and eventually you will land in the Nahoon.

What makes the Nahoon River a memorable spot to SUP is the location alone. This is where the people of East London come to relax and play. The banks are covered with beautiful hotels, giant homes for locals, and plenty of activities to enjoy while on the water.

On any given day you can expect to see boats, canoes, jet skis, houseboats, and now stand up paddle boards being used on the water to take in the view and stop into any riverside restaurants or gift shops.

What’s even more exciting is the river happens to be the location of the southernmost mangrove plantations in Africa. The Dassie Trail winds its way on a boardwalk through the estuary. It’s a fantastic nature trail for the young and old to enjoy.

One of the best places to stay while in town is the Blue Lagoon Hotel. The views of the river here are incredible. If you’re looking for a location with action and relaxation, the Nahoon River might be your go-to.

Bonza Bay River (Quenera River)

The Quenera River, or more commonly known as the Bonza Bay River to locals, is a quieter beach experience compared to our other locations. It shares its banks with the Quenera Local Authority Nature Reserve and during the non-rainy season the mouth of the river silts up and forms a dam-like structure at the river's mouth. During this time you can expect to paddle near perfect conditions with calm winds and no current. Head here if you’re looking to relax and have a fun afternoon on a calm body of water.

SUP in South Africa

The Gonubie River

Gonubie is one of the most popular tourist destinations in East London. Especially for a seaside holiday. The Gonubie River is part of the attraction. On it’s route is passes through the Lomardy Private Nature Reserve and winds its way past the Gonubie Estuary landing finally at the Gonubie River Mouth. This is the perfect spot if you want to SUP. The River Mouth is famous for its surfing, snorkeling and fishing. And is a great place to paddle to if you want to start further upriver. For a bonus location, head to Deary Drive where you will find pubs, restaurants, and coffee shops for a fun-filled time in East London.

Additional Flatwater Launch Locations

Victoria and Alfred Waterfront

If you want to leave the beaches and take in the city sights then head to the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in the heart of the city. These waters are calm, protected, and flow through the city in a series of canals. Once on the water you’ll be surrounded by tremendous views of Table Bay and the mountains.

SUP in South Africa

Addington Beach (Durban)

Addington Beach is a wide, clean beach that is located on the Durban beachfront for SUP in South Africa. It’s a smooth and safe area of the Indian ocean. You can ride a few small waves here, but mostly, it’s easy to paddle past the breakers and enjoy your time on the quiet ocean.

As you spend time on the water, it’s likely you’ll be able to spot dolphins or other aquatic creatures from the vantage point of your SUP. One cool feature - you’ll be able to see the city skyline from the water for some amazing views!

SUP in South Africa

Umengi River (Pietermaritzburg)

If you’re looking for a truly flat-water experience for SUP in South Africa we recommend heading inland from Durban to the Umengi River.

The river from Blue Lagoon upstream is probably the long flatwater paddle you can do in the area. However, the water here is tidal. That means the currents will dictate your paddling direction and the water quality. It is best to always reference a tide chart to time your expedition correctly and avoid having to paddle against the current on the way back.

Once on the water though, you’ll be treated with fantastic birdlife viewing with common sightings of the Kingfisher and Fish Eagle species. Well worth a trip for your river paddling fanatics!

Inanda Dam (Inanda)

The calm water reservoir created by the Inanda Dam is perfect for a relaxing afternoon time for SUP in South Africa. Besides the views of the large dam, which are impressive enough, you’ll also be surrounded by lush green forests, big boulders on the shoreline, and plenty of wildlife to scope out and see.

Emmarentia Dam (Randburg)

The Emmarentia Dam is one of the best kept secrets for SUP in South Africa. The flatwater reservoir is perfect for beginners to learn on a calm body of water where the elements such as wind and currents, are all but eliminated.

If you want to take a lesson with some of the best instructors in the area, contact SUP Fitness from our list above. They hold classes everyday on this body of water. They know the ins and outs of the location and will be able to provide you with a wealth of knowledge on SUP as well as where else to go in the area!

Where to SUP Surf in South Africa

When SUP surfing in South Africa, there is one thing to always remember - wear a thick wetsuit! No matter the time of year, the water here is chilly. Always be mindful of the water temperatures before you head to any of these breaks. In some instances you may need booties as well.

Muizenberg Beach - Surfer’s Corner (Cape Town)

Muizenberg is a beginner SUP surfer’s dream. The waves are small, yet fun. They break consistently and gently. It’s the perfect place for a beginner to pick up SUP surfing, or for an advanced paddler to enjoy some mellow waves under the sun.

The brightly colored houses and rock faces along the shore only add to the South African ambiance. And there are plenty of places to rent a board and a wetsuit including from Xpressions on the Beach - located right on Muizenberg.

You want to look for a north-westerly wind and a south-south-westerly/south-easterly swell to get the right conditions.

If you were looking to surf one place during your stay in South Africa where you are guaranteed to have a fun and safe time, Muizenberg Beach should be at the top of your list.

Eland’s Bay (Western Cape)

Do you want to avoid a crowded surfing lineup? Then Eland’s Bay is your choice. It is located 125 miles north of Cape Town and is situated on South Africa’s Western Coast. Warning for those looking for luxury - this spot is pretty rugged. There are a few rentals to be had, but otherwise come prepared to either rough it for the night or head somewhere else to stay.

The swell here works best in the summer, and it can get too overhead in size. But even though it might be summer when you visit, bring boots, a hoodie, and gloves, the water here is freezing.

Kommetjie - Long Beach (Western Cape)

Kommetjie is home to some of the best surfing locations along the Cape Peninsula. Waves can range from beginner friendly to well overhead. You can also find point breaks, beach breaks, and reef breaks here.

But for our purposes, we’re going to point you towards Long Beach.

This is the hub of surfing. And arguably the most consistent entry-level surf spot on the Atlantic coast of the Peninsula.

It has one of the most beautiful backdrops for surfing with large white sandy beaches and greens that stretch on for miles. The waves here are offshore in any southerly winds and the multiple sand-bottomed peaks are rideable even when its small. One word of warning, because this is the hub of surfing in the area, it can get crowded. On any given weekend you are likely to find 100 or more surfers in the water and twice that on the beach. But, it’s popular for a reason! You’ll have a great time surfing at Long Beach.

Cape St. Francis (Eastern Cape)

Cape St. Francis is not to be confused with the nearby St. Francis Bay which was immortalized in the classic surf movie Endless Summer. St. Francis Bay is one of the best locations to surf when the wave known as Bruce’s Beauties is firing down the bay, creating barrely that roll for miles. It’s a sight to see. However, at any other time, the Cape is a better location with a variety of shore and point breaks with the best of them all being Seal Point near the lighthouse.

It’s always worth a shot to check both, but Cape St. Francis has proven to be more consistent over the years.

Jeffrey’s Bay (Eastern Cape)

Are you ready to ride some tubes? Home to the World Surf League’s J-Bay Open, this location is world famous for its consistent tubes.

It has been surfed by world-famous riders the likes of Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, and more. Obviously, if you are not on this level, you are better off sticking to a more mellow wave. But we had to include it on our list if only to suggest that you head here and see some of the best surfers in the world. Especially as they slide down wave and sink into a barrel at Jeffrey’s Bay.

South Beach (Durban)

This might be your go-to spot as it is a friendly longboard wave tailor made for SUP in South Africa. And more specifically, SUP surfing in Durban. There is plenty of room to roam around, find the best shoulder, and shoot down the line. Just be aware of the other longboarders in the water with you. After you’re done surfing, there are plenty of places along the shore to grab a bite to eat, relax, and watch the others in the water have the time of their lives.

Ushaka Beach (Durban)

Most beginners in SUP surfing start their journey in South Africa at Ushaka Beach or behind the closeby Vetch’s Reef. The waves here are consistent and mellow enough for even the beginner to splash around in. There is parking available at uShaka Parking or directly on the street for your convenience. Come early to avoid any traffic that might cause you to miss the best waves of the day!

Where to Downwind in South Africa

South Africa is known as the spot for the most epic downwind runs in the entire world. If you are not experienced in downwinding, we recommend you take a lesson on an easier stretch of water with a qualified instructor. It can get squirrely in the ocean. It is always best to start slow. And work up when you have the necessary skills and experience.

And it is always suggested you go with a guide while in South Africa. If you’re not sure who to contact be sure to use our SUP Search section or contact the shops we listed above!

Milnerton Run

This is Cape Town’s most iconic and well-trodden downwind run. It consists of a 7-mile path on the Table Bay side of Cape Town and runs from Milnerton Lighthouse to the Big Bay Bloubergstrand.

The entry and exit for this run can be challenging (especially heading out through the breakers). And is usually left up to experienced paddlers to conquer. The swell can be sizable so timing is everything!

However, once you’re on the open ocean, the southeast wind known as the “Cape Doctor” will sweep you across the bay. Ride the waves towards your destination. The wind really picks up along the sides of Table Mountain and pushes you along this stretch of the run.

Once you land back in Big Bay Bloubergstrand, you can let your adrenaline settle and share stories about the size of the wind swell you rode the entire way.

The Milnerton Run has become an iconic part of the SUP culture in South Africa and if you’re an experienced paddler looking for a fun time, this is the trip for you.

Miller’s Run

The Miller’s Run is on the False Bay side of the peninsula and is an incredibly scenic downwind run. You will be in awe of the natural beauty that surrounds this section of ocean. Launch from the boat ramp located in a protected cove with mountains behind a deep blue ocean.

Did you catch that last part? You get to launch from a boat ramp. No need to battle any waves as you get ready to shoot down Miller’s Run. Your aim is for the Roman Rock Light where you will veer slightly to the left to make the run into Fish Hoek Beach.

The unique part about Miller’s is that it combines wind swell and groundswell, making for one epic time on the water.

Langebaan Lagoon

Langebaan Lagoon is the place to go if you're not ready for a downwind run. While it is mostly protected from powerful winds you’ll find on your typical downwinder, you will still be able to paddle around this area’s epic natural landscapes. This is a great place for beginners to begin their South African journey into the local SUP scene.
