____________
The Tri-State area is the main hub of the United States. It’s where everyone thinks of first when they think of the U.S. It’s also where most people go on their first visit.
But before we get any farther into the Tri-State, it helps to define exactly what and where it is. To put it simply, the Tri-State area consists of three locations…
-Connecticut
-New York
-New Jersey
These three states hold within them excellent places to paddle board and kayak. In addition, they have every environment imaginable including lakes, rivers, oceans, and rivers.
Whatever your pleasure is, you’re guaranteed to find it here. Beyond paddling locations, the tri-state area is home to some of the world’s biggest tourist attractions including the Big Apple itself, New York City.
It is in these three states that we intend to search, explore, and discover what they have to offer paddlers whether you’re a beginner, experienced, or something in between.
Ready to get into our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area? Let’s go!

For short-term visitors who need to rent a board while you’re in town, we’ll go over where you can pick up a board, what types of boards are available, and where you can launch your board on calmer waters.

Best Time of Year to Visit:
The best time to visit New York is anytime. Each season in Gotham offers visitors plenty of reasons to visit. Early fall offers crisp breezes, bright sun and comfortable temperatures while late fall and winter make merry with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and holiday decorations.
Deep winter – January and February – is cold, but that also means cheaper hotel rates – but paddling is difficult, dangerous, and often not undertaken during this time.
Spring is glorious and New Yorkers celebrate the thaw by taking to the streets, shopping at outdoor markets, frolicking in Central Park and dining outside. Summer is hot, but hey, so are lots of places, and at least this is New York. (travel.usnews.com)
With that said, if your main intention is to paddle as much as possible in the Tri-State area, the best times to go are Spring and Summer, and Fall! These time periods during the year offer the warmest weather and even more important, the warmest water temperatures in case you do happen to fall in. Keep that in mind when planning your trip.

Potential Water Hazards
Many of the popular launch locations in our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area involve tides, currents, heavy commercial, naval, and recreational boat traffic, fog, and of course, the wind.
If you plan on paddling in the ocean, make sure you have experience in this environment. It is difficult to stand, let alone paddle, on the wide open ocean. If you are inexperienced, you can be in for a long, and potentially dangerous, time. Before you head out, take a beginner lesson with one of our Perfect Paddles outfitters listed in this guide. They will be able to get you prepared for the challenge.
In addition, most of the flatwater conditions are tide dependent. As well as wind dependent. Before you head out, always check the weather. If there are plans for a storm, it is best to wait for a different day. You can also check the wind direction and strength through wind apps like windy.app.
SUP Skills You Need to Have Before You Head Out
No matter where you plan to paddle you should always have a basic understanding of the SUP fundamentals. This includes how to stand, the proper paddling technique - paddle in a straight line, stop quickly, hold position, and high gear (speed) to get through chop, upwind, etc. - and how to get back on your board if you should fall off.
This is especially true in the ocean. When paddling here, you need to understand the wind, the tides, and the currents. As well as how to paddle through the surf zone.
To get a basic understanding of paddle technique and to get an idea of whether you’re ready to take your skills to the ocean, please refer to the following articles:

Wind and Weather and Where/When to Paddle
The winds in the Tri-State vary on your location, the environment you’re paddling in, and what time of year you’re paddling. It is difficult to say exactly when you’ll meet a windy day or not. Due to this variability, we recommend you check out a wind and weather app before heading to the water.
We’ve compiled a list of the best wind and weather apps in this article:
5 Wind and Weather Apps You Need for the SUP SeasonIn addition, check our Ultimate Guide to Paddling in the Wind for the best tips and tricks to stay safe while on the water.
Or even better, check with a local Paddling Professional. They are equipped to provide you with the best information about a specific paddling location. The Paddling Professionals here have been paddling in these locations for years and have amassed a large knowledge base of the area. They will be your best resource before heading onto the water.
Local Wildlife Info From Paddling Pros
SUP and Kayak Guide to the Tri-State Area: Fire Island
Here’s what Joe from Long Island SUP has to say about Fire Island, “If you’re looking for an interesting place to paddle head to what’s called “The Breach.” It’s a spot on the island that was created by Hurricane Sandy. But what makes it such a great place to go is the water is crystal clear. It’s like the Keys. You can spot all kinds of fish there. And it’s too shallow for boats to go so you’ll be alone on the water. It’s located on the eastern end of Fire Island.
That’s a place I would recommend for sure. If you want more information about going there, contact Long Island SUP and I can hook you up with the right information and boards to get you there.”
SUP and Kayak Guide to the Tri-State Area: Jamaica Bay
Jamaica Bay is a wildlife refuge, home to various species of birds and marine life, making it a unique opportunity to connect with nature while enjoying the serenity of the water. As Hank puts it, 'Jamaica Bay is really a hidden gem of a place to paddle because it’s located close to the cultural centers of New York City. After you’re done exploring the city and you want a place to hang out in nature, this is the place to go.'
There are many launch options available, including the Floyd Bennett Field and the Gateway Marina, which provide ample parking and facilities for paddlers. Floyd Bennett Field, an abandoned airfield turned park, offers easy access to the water and a unique place to visit and explore.
As you paddle through the bay's channels and inlets, each with its own unique views and wildlife sightings, you'll discover that Jamaica Bay has something for everyone. And as Hank notes, 'You can get here by subway or by a beautiful ferry ride that’s just fantastic. It’s a great way to relax after being in the city.'"

The group will have time to learn some local history and gain new awareness of the Hudson River estuary during this expedition along the New Jersey side of the Hudson. A certified guide will provide instruction. The group will practice paddling skills in a protected embayment and then the guide will lead the group out onto the river. Depending on the needs of the group, we'll plan to take a short land break at Liberty State Park.
SUP and Sip with Long Island SUP
Long Island SUP - From Joe, “We offer mega floats, flamingo floats which hold 12-14 people, and floating cabanas. We rent those to couples most of the time. We anchor up a cabana, rent two boards, provide wine, and couples will use these cabanas as their home base. So, they can paddle around the bay, and then head back to the cabana to relax and sip on some wine. It’s pretty popular. We can also paddle to different restaurants on the river such at The Oar Steak and Seafood Grill, Dublin Deck, Off-Key Tiki, and Harbor Crab.”
SUP Yoga
My Salty Soul Yoga - SUP Yoga is a yoga class on a Stand Up Paddleboard. Practicing a gentle vinyasa flow outside giving you a perfect place to ground and reset. SUP yoga helps improve your balance, core strength, and the ability to challenge yourself. Class begins with a short paddle, anchoring the boards and then connecting our body and our breath. The class is designed and modified for all levels.
ItsSwell SUP and Yoga - SUP yoga is just like traditional yoga but it’s done using a board in the water instead of a mat in the studio. SUP yoga offers a thorough, low-impact workout that aims to improve your core and other stabilizing muscles. Picture yourself in a meditative state, warm breeze across your face, your fingertips trailing gently in the water, as you float like a sun-kissed Buddha.
SUP and Kayak Guide to the Tri-State Area: Top SUP Launch Locations
From the iconic summers at the Jersey Shore to scenic paddle tours showcasing the Statue of Liberty and fall foliage, the New York Metropolitan tri-state area offers a plethora of paddle boarding opportunities across flat-water, white-water, and surf zones. With hundreds of lakes, ponds, rivers, canals, tidal zones, and coastal miles to explore, this region is a true haven for paddlers.
The gold coast of Long Island, reminiscent of the Great Gatsby era, and the Hamptons are also worth a visit. As the largest metropolitan area in the world and one of the most populated, this region experiences hot and humid summers, thunderstorms, and snow in the winter months. However, the Atlantic can temper the coastal conditions.
During spring and fall, the water temperatures and river flows can vary dramatically. With the primary paddle season spanning from April to November, experience and guidance can go a long way toward enjoying the scenic paddling locations of this region. Upstate New York is also included, inviting visitors to explore the Hudson River Valley, St. Lawrence Seaway, and all the lakes, rivers, and ponds in between. Don't let the colder months deter you - just dress appropriately and enjoy all that the tri-state area has to offer for paddle boarders.
Connecticut
Coastal Connecticut, located on the western edge of Long Island Sound, is a picturesque estuary brimming with colonial history and natural beauty. While it may not offer the swells of the ocean, it is influenced by tidal and river currents, making it a prime destination for paddle boarders. Cruise along Coastal Route 1 and take in the stunning sights, but be sure to steer clear of private beaches (a bummer, we know!).
Harkness State Park in New London offers a breathtakingly scenic nature paddle, while other notable spots include the Salmon River in Hamden, Saugatuck River in Westport, Candlestick Lake, and Connecticut River (Essex, Wethersfield Cove, and the boat house just north of Hartford are all great places to put in). For a thrill, check out the Housatonic River or the Farmington River, known as one of the most beautiful rivers in the world. And for an immersive experience, the Mystic River boasts stunning coastal Connecticut towns, lighthouse islands, and the historic whaling village and ships at Mystic Seaport. Keep an eye on river levels and enjoy the beauty of Coastal Connecticut on your paddle board adventure.
Mystic River, Mystic
The Mystic River is located in southwest Connecticut and makes its way onto the first spot of our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area. It is described as being calm, quiet, and perfect for a relaxing afternoon on the water.
The best launch locations are located for free at the River Road boat launches. Once you’re on the water, you’ll be able to see the Mystic Seaport, downtown Mystic, and the Mystic River Bascule Bridge. Along with these landmarks, you’ll also spot egrets, herons, ospreys, and other exciting wildlife along the river.
Head here for a relaxing time on the water on a quiet river setting.
Branford River, Branford
Another great and quiet spot for our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area is located at the Branford River in Branford. The best places to drop in on the river are located at the marinas that dot the shores of this location. Once on the water you can expect a calm paddle with plenty to see. You’ll be able to spot the city skyline of Branford, stop along the way to catch a bite to eat, relax, and continue your journey.
One thing to keep in mind, make sure you are paddling against the wind on the way out and with the wind on the way back. The currents here can pick up, especially in a wind, so be sure you’re prepared for the return trip!
Candlewood Lake
If you’re not into river paddling, then you’re next best option is to head to Candlewood Lake! This is one of the most beautiful locations in the state of Connecticut.
On the water, you’ll be surrounded by rolling hills full of thick pine trees. In addition, you’ll see houses and apartment buildings along the coast. This spot is great if you’re into hiking along with paddling. Climb up the sloping mountainsides to see the sunset after a long day of paddling. You won’t regret visiting this location on our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area!
Farmington River
This might be the most iconic paddling location in Connecticut. And it has to the do with the fact that many people enjoy paddling here every year. There is a bit of a current and in some locations you have the chance of hitting some rocky stretches. Make sure you know where you are at all times. If you’re not sure where to drop-in, contact a local paddling pro in the area who will be able to inform you on the best spots to drop in and explore.
For a special treat, head here at the start of fall on a warm day. The change in colors is a sight to see on the water! And a big reason why Farmington River made it into our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area
Bigelow Hollow Park & Nipmuck State Forest
This is a great place to SUP because it’s a state park. And it has a few bodies of water you can explore on your SUP.
It’s located just south of the Massachusetts state border so if you’re currently located in Massachusetts and you want a new place to explore, head here.
The main paddling areas include the Mashapaug Lake and Bigelow, Griggs, and Breakneck ponds.
Our recommendation: head to Mashapaug Lake. This 300-acre lake is the biggest and best place to explore within the park. Consider this scenic paddling section your go-to spot in northern Connecticut.
Pattaconk Lake
This beautiful lake launch location is nestled in the Cockaponset State Forest park and is the second largest forested area in Connecticut.
What makes this spot special?
The fishing. If you’re an avid SUP fishing expert or even a beginner, you can cast a line overboard with the chance to catch yellow perch, channel catfish, and largemouth bass for a fun afternoon reeling in your catch.
If you’re not into fishing, this is still a fun location to drop in, paddle around, and hang out.
Squantz Pond State Park
The Squantz Pond State park is flanked by beaches on either side making it an ideal location to drop in and paddle around for beginners. The easy beach start makes carrying and dropping in your board a breeze.
One thing to keep in mind…
There are limited parking spots available. 250 to be exact. And once these spots fill up, you will not be able to enter the park. Plan for an early-bird launch and you’ll be able to take advantage of this ideal paddling spot for the entire day!
Mount Tom State Park
The next location on our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area takes us just outside Litchfield, CT. And it is one of the most popular places for summer-loving people to hang out, have fun, swim, and enjoy the sunshine.
Mount Tom is one of the oldest parks in the state being established in 1915. For paddlers looking for water, head to Mount Tom Pond. This calm paddling location is a great place to relax for the afternoon. However, it does get crowded so be sure to head here early! Especially during the summer months.
Bluff Point Coastal Reserve
We might have saved the best for last on our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area. Why is the Bluff Point reserve the best place? Because of its location you can explore different paddling areas in Connecticut right from this launch location.
For starters, head to Pine Island, opposite the University of Connecticut Southeastern Branch, for a fun place to relax and explore in between time on the water.
If you continue to head east, you can find your way into Mumford Cove from Mumford Point. The area that lays around the entrance here is teaming with wildlife that you’ll be able to easily spot.
And if you’re the adventuring type, continue onto Groton Long Point Main Beach or up the road off of Neptune Drive for a true paddling adventure.
Head here if you’re in the mood for a long-distance paddle where you’ll be able to see plenty of what Connecticut has to offer on the water.
New York
Manhattan, the cultural and financial hub of the world, is a densely populated island surrounded by the Hudson, East, and Harlem rivers, as well as miles of river walks and parks. With plenty of paddling opportunities in the area, exploring this iconic skyline from a unique vantage point is a natural fit for paddle boarders.
While paddling around Liberty Island or taking in the explosive fall foliage colors from the water may seem like an ideal experience, navigating the meeting point of different bodies of water can pose a challenge, given the presence of major shipping and ferry traffic. However, with proper planning and awareness, paddle boarders can enjoy this unforgettable experience while escaping the summer heat.
Come see why SUP is a popular way to explore the rivers of Manhattan and the surrounding areas.
Hudson River + Manhattan Waterways
How can you paddle in New York without heading onto the famous Hudson River?
The best place to drop in is at Hudson River Park. With over 500 acres of park area to explore, this area offers a wide-range of water sports experiences.
Of course, the Hudson River is a busy waterway. And the wind can pick up here. So, if you’re not comfortable, or experienced enough to head onto the water by yourself, be sure to contact either Manhattan Kayak and SUP or Resilience Watersports. Both of these outfitters offer world-class guidance and support on the water. This includes lessons and tours you can take while you’re in Manhattan.
We recommend a guided tour to see the Statue of Liberty! This unique experience takes you right outside the famous landmark where your instructors can take pictures that you’ll be able to cherish for years to come. It’s an exciting opportunity with the best instructors in New York.
Brooklyn Bridge Park
The next location in our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area takes us to the busy borough of Brooklyn. Head to the Brooklyn Bridge Park located in Pier 2.
This is where you can experience some of the best scenic paddling in New York. The newly redesigned and rebuilt park offers a beautiful place to stop, launch, and paddle around. If you’re looking for the best place to paddle in New York, it might be found at the Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Related note: Check out what this commuter decided to do to get to his business meeting on time!
Salt Marsh Nature Center and Marine Park
We’re staying in Brooklyn with our next stop on our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area. The Salt Marsh Nature Center is Brooklyn’s largest park with plenty of floral and fauna that transforms the urban space.
Your initial launch location will be the Gerritsen Inlet. From there you can float through quiet creeks and marshes for a few miles. And if you’re an adventurer, you can paddle all the way to the Atlantic Ocean or even to the Rockaways!
Plus, when you’re back at the original launch location you can check out the Nature Center for a fun way to spend time on land!
Jamaica Bay
The next stop on our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area is the beautiful Jamaica Bay in Queens, New York. This hidden gem is perfect for those seeking a peaceful paddle boarding experience with stunning views. As you paddle through the calm waters, you’ll be amazed by the picturesque scenery that surrounds you. The area is wide-open on the water, allowing for an unobstructed view of the sun setting over the horizon.
But that's not all, Jamaica Bay is also a wildlife refuge, spanning over 18,000 acres of wetlands. As you glide through the waters, you might catch a glimpse of some of the local wildlife, including various species of birds and marine life that call this area their home. It's a unique opportunity to connect with nature while enjoying the serenity of the water.
Floyd Bennett Airfield
When it comes to launching your paddleboard, there are many options available. The Floyd Bennett Airfield and the Gateway Marina are great launch spots that offer ample parking and facilities for paddlers. The Floyd Bennett Field is an abandoned airfield that has been turned into a park. It’s a unique place to visit, walk around, and provides easy access to the water while there.
Once you hit the water, you can explore the bay's many channels and inlets, each offering their own unique views and wildlife sightings. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced paddler, Jamaica Bay has something for everyone. So, come experience the beauty and tranquility of this hidden gem in the heart of New York City.
Hank explains, “Jamaica Bay is really a hidden gem of a place to paddle because it’s located close to the cultural centers of New York City. After you’re done exploring the city and you want a place to hang out in nature, this is the place to go.
You can get here by subway or by a beautiful ferry ride that’s just fantastic. It’s a great way to relax after being in the city.”
If you’re in NYC and want a break from the city-life be sure to visit Hank at Surf Skate Fitness in Jamaica Bay and Rockway Beach!
Speaking about Rockaway Beach…
Rockaway Beach
The next paddleboarding destination on our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area is none other than the famous Rockaway Beach, located in the heart of Queens. Known for its legendary music scene and as the home of the Ramones, Rockaway Beach is also an excellent spot for paddleboarding enthusiasts.
With its long stretch of beaches and waters, Rockaway Beach is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Or as Hank explains, “There’s a vibrant surf scene here. And of course music has been a part of this place for decades. It’s a spot where I run my business out of, Surf Skate Fitness, and I hope everyone who has the chance to visit does.”
As you paddle along the shoreline, you’ll be able to take in the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the New York City skyline. Keep an eye out for local marine life, including dolphins and seals, which can often be spotted swimming near the shore.
Whether you’re a seasoned paddleboarder or just looking to try something new, Rockaway Beach is an excellent choice for a fun-filled day on the water. So come paddleboard, relax on the beach, and pay homage to the legendary music scene that once called this place home.
Croton Point Park
Looking to escape the city? Head to Croton Point Park. This launch spot is located about an hour outside of the busy streets of New York.
This park is beautiful. And it’s characterized as being a calmer section of the Hudson River which is great for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. The wind and waves here are much calmer than in busier stretches of the river. So, if you’re a beginner located in the New York area, this is the best place for you to paddle.
Fire Island
Next up on our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area is Fire Island, located just off the coast of Long Island, New York. The island is known for its stunning beaches, diverse wildlife, and laid-back vibe. When it comes to paddle boarding, Fire Island is a great destination for both beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
One of the highlights of Fire Island is the western end of the island known as the Fire Island Lighthouse Beach. Here, you'll find crystal-clear waters that are perfect for stand-up paddleboarding. As you paddle along the shoreline, you'll be able to see all sorts of marine life swimming beneath your board, including schools of fish and even the occasional seal.
If you're looking for a more relaxed paddle, head to the Great South Bay. The bay is home to several calm coves and bays that are ideal for leisurely paddling. You can launch your board from several locations, including the Watch Hill Marina and Sailors Haven Marina.
And it’s too shallow for boats to go so you’ll be alone on the water. It’s located on the eastern end of Fire Island.
That’s a place I would recommend for sure. If you want more information about going there, contact Long Island SUP and I can hook you up with the right information and boards to get you there.”
East Patchogue River
If you're looking for a more secluded paddle boarding experience, East Patchogue River may be just the spot for you. Nestled in the heart of Long Island, this serene river offers calm waters and stunning views of the surrounding marshland.
One of the most unique aspects of East Patchogue River is the abundance of wildlife you can spot while paddling, including ospreys, herons, and egrets.
There are several launch points along the river, including a public boat ramp at Sunset Harbour Yacht Club where Long Island SUP runs its lessons and rentals. With plenty of parking and picnic areas available, East Patchogue River is a great spot for a full day of paddle boarding and relaxing by the water.
Joe from Long Island SUP explains, “East Patchogue River is a great place for beginners. It’s shallow enough, calm enough, there’s not a lot of boats, only a mile paddle to the bay, and easy enough to get on the water, get acclimated, and paddling fast.”

East Hampton
East Hampton, located on the easternmost point of Long Island, is a fantastic destination for stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) enthusiasts of all skill levels. With an unlimited number of bays, ponds, and waterways, there is no shortage of places to paddle in East Hampton. And that's why its on our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area! Miles and miles of ocean beaches offer perfect conditions for SUP surfing and downwind paddles.
One of the advantages of East Hampton is the availability of daily parking at many ocean beaches, and most bays have non-permit parking locations, making it easy for visitors to access the water. Beginners can start by mastering flat water SUP and gradually move out to the larger bays and the Atlantic Ocean, making East Hampton an ideal location for learning and practicing SUP skills.
While East Hampton is a seasonal destination, with the best time to visit is during the summer for warmer water temperatures and early fall for better hotel rates and fewer crowds, the water temperatures can reach as warm as 79 degrees Fahrenheit in some spots, making it comfortable for paddlers in a bathing suit and sunscreen.
Access to the water can be tricky if you are not a local, so it is essential to check the parking signs. However, Gina and the team at Paddle Diva, tell visitors, "It's always best to check in with local paddlers on the best places to go. We know the areas well, as well as the wind forecasts, so reach out to us anytime you're in East Hampton and want to paddle!"

Shipyard Marina
If you want a taste of the city life but don’t want to commit to crossing the Hudson into New York, the next best thing is located in Hoboken, New Jersey.
This section of city streets is the hometown of Frank Sinatra and has countless places to hang out, eat, and explore.
And one of the best places to start a paddling adventure is at the Shipyard Marina.
The marina itself is typically calm and somewhat quiet. However, on hot summer days, you are likely to encounter plenty of boat traffic.
But it provides paddlers with an excellent place to easily launch their boards and make their way onto the water for perfect views of the New York City skyline. This is a must-see experience for any avid paddler located in northern Jersey.
Ocean City Beach
Do you have a young family of paddling fanatics? If so, then Ocean City, New Jersey is the place for you.
It’s long been known as a family resort town since its banning of alcohol sales in 1879. So while other parts of the New Jersey Shore are typically rowdy and rude, the crowd at Ocean City is quiet and relaxed.
Plus, with over 8 miles of pristine white sandy beaches to explore both on and off your board, it’s the perfect setting for a weekend vacation under the sun.
And if you don’t want to risk paddling in the ocean you can head over to Great Egg Harbor Bay where the water is flat and calm. When you’re there it’s likely you’ll see plenty of wildlife along the shores. For those interested, Ocean City is also an excellent place to SUP surf. But we’ll get to that more in a bit in our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area.
Wallkill River
One interesting fact about the Wallkill River – it flows northward just like the Rhine and the Nile. Paddling here you experience a great diversity of habitats from paddling under tall rock cliffs, around meadows, and even floodplains.
The river itself runs through the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge and along additional New Jersey parks. The refuge holds 40 mammal species, 225 bird species, and even a few amphibians that belong to rare and endangered species lists.
One thing to keep in mind – be sure to talk to the refuge office before you launch your SUP here. The water levels tend to fluctuate and it’s good to know when they are likely to do so.
Passaic River
The Passaic river stretches roughly 80 miles in length starting in North Jersey and flowing south.
Our recommendation is to drop in at Two Bridges Road in Lincoln Park. This is the easiest place to find a stretch of the river that is suitable for paddling. Also in this section, you will be paddling on a stretch that is bordered on both sides by The Great Piece Meadows wildlife preserve. In this area, you are likely to spot hawks, herons, swans, turtles, foxes, and deer in their natural habitat.
This is a great stretch of river for paddling fanatics to enjoy and it certainly belongs in our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area.

And it’s a great place to spend an afternoon with family and friends. If you’re looking for a calm day on a flat body of water, head to the Manasquan Reservoir.
Atlantic City
Bright lights. Big-city vibes. And casinos. Plenty of casinos. If there was one place that is considered for an adult trip it’s Atlantic City.
Besides being able to gamble, watch a show, and explore the city streets, Atlantic City is also built around a beautiful stretch of beach. You can paddle here after a night out. Just make sure the waves aren’t rocking too much before you decide to go.
If you’re looking for a place with plenty of nightlife where you can also take a paddle on the ocean, Atlantic City is your go-to.

One such place is Greenwood Lake in Ringwood, New Jersey. This sprawling lake is calm, has minimal boat traffic, and for much of the day, light winds.
All of which adds up to the best place to paddle if you’re a beginner or want a calm day on the water.

The park provides convenient access to paddle board rentals, lessons, and guided tours, making it an ideal destination for both novice and experienced paddlers. The park's calm waters and gentle waves make it a great spot for beginners, while the open ocean and river provide a challenge for more experienced paddle boarders.
And according to Brandon from Sandy Hook Kayaks, "One of the best places to paddle, especially for beginners, is inside Sany Hook Park. Head to Lot C on the bayside. This is the easiest spot to park, launch and paddle, while having fun. You won't be disappointed. You can even drop into Sany Hook Kayaks to rent a couple of boards and get on the water."
Overall, Sandy Hook Park is a fantastic destination for anyone looking to explore the natural beauty of the New Jersey coastline while enjoying the fun and excitement of paddle boarding.
Cape May

At Sunset Beach, you'll find a serene and sheltered cove, perfect for launching your board and exploring the coastline. As you paddle out, you'll be surrounded by stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the historic Cape May lighthouse. So to cap off the list in our SUP and kayak guide to the Tri-State area, head to Sunset Beach, the best place to launch your paddleboard and experience the beauty of Cape May.
Tri-State SUP Surfing Information
If you are a true beginner in SUP surfing, we recommend you take a lesson (or two, or three) before you give this activity a try.
Locals can be territorial when it comes to their breaks, so you don’t want to cause any problems while on the water. In addition, SUP boards are big and they are heavy compared to their much smaller surfboard counterparts. If you are inexperienced, you can easily lose control of your board, or your paddle, and put surfers in immediate danger.
With that said, if you’re a seasoned surfer with plenty of experience underneath your belt - these are the best longboard and SUP surfing waves to check out while in the Tri-State Area!
Top SUP Surfing Locations

Unfortunately for Connecticut residents, Long Island blocks the Atlantic swells from reaching its shores. There are a few places with small waves, but truth be told, you’re better off heading to either Long Island, NYC, or beaches in Rhode Island as they are within driving distance for most people living in the state.
Plenty of great places to paddle in CT and if you’re looking for moving water and testing your skills it may be time to try out river paddling - guidance is highly suggested here so check our list of local Pros

Several surfing schools operate on specific beaches every day, making it easy for new surfers to learn.

One last possibility is to check out Rockaway Beach and Hank from Surf Skate Fitness for some surfing. As he puts it, “there is a vibrant surf culture here, but if you’re on a SUP, you’ll want to walk down the beach and away from the crowd.” No one, after all, wants to be that guy on the surfboard that’s snaking all the waves. Instead, stay out of the crowds and have fun while doing it!

Sandy Hook is one of the most coveted surfing spots in New Jersey. Situated at the northernmost tip of the Jersey Shore, it boasts a classic point break that creates mainly right-hand waves. Belmar has a picturesque stretch of family-friendly beaches, but the 16th Avenue beach is the most popular among surfers. It's a good spot to catch waves on all swells, and it's accessible via NJ Transit. For those who want to learn how to surf, Eastern Lines Surf Shop and the local Summertime Surf school offer surfing lessons.
Manasquan Inlet is a surfer's paradise, with some of the longest rides on the coast due to the long jetty. This charming shore town has a friendly vibe, and the inlet can handle up to 20-foot waves with two fast, bowl-shaped peaks and the occasional quality left. Locals tend to populate the area, giving the town a close-knit, community feel.

Hoodoo Brown Barbecue in Ridgefield, CT
It’s hard to narrow down in a blurb what Hoodoo Brown Barbecue does well. Let’s just say, everything. Regardless of your personal smoked meat preferences, do not miss their brisket, complete with a perfect rosy red smoke ring and outer bark effect, but it’s so damn juicy that it’s best described as wet. Then there’s the pork belly with a chicharron-like cracklin’ skin, served with a fresh salsa that they like to call “Hoodoo Voodoo.” And they have special days like Baby Back Wednesday, Prime Rib Thursday, French Dip Friday, and Tex Mex Tuesday (first Tuesday of each month) where they whip up birria tacos, BBQ empanadas, enchiladas, and more. I could go on and on about their Texas inspired ‘cue but it’s smart you go, order up a platter and try a bunch. —Andrew Dominick, CTbites
Elm in New Canaan, CT
We'll start by saying: The closest thing you'll get to a Double-Double, Animal-Style Burger outside of In-N-Out in LA, is in CT, at Elm. See evidence here. More than that though, Chef Luke Venner's unparalleled pastas are the heart and soul of Elm. Although they change seasonally, all hell would break loose the day he takes the bucatini or hand-cut lumache sauced up in n'djua bolognese off the menu. There's also afternoon tea on Fridays that rivals some of the best in the nation, with a worldly selection of brews, plus mini scones, black truffle croque monsieur and a tiny, yet mighty, wasabi lobster roll. —Kelli Acciardo, Parade
Swyft in Kent, CT
Sure Swyft has other things on their menu, and they are all tasty as heck, but their signature three-day fermented sourdough wood-fired, farm-driven, Neapolitan-inspired pizzas are the bomb. The mozzarella is house-stretched, and the crust is perfectly charred with just the right amount of texture. Highlights include the Forager with king oyster mushrooms, delicata squash, bechamel, and sage, or The Alchemist with house made mozzarella, black garlic, miso, broccolini, and guanciale. We like everything they are doing here. —Stephanie Webster, CTbites
Rosina's in Greenwich, CT
Fortina alum Chef Jared Falco is doing big things in the kitchen at Rosina's, his new Italian spot in Greenwich serving lights-out pastas, NY-style pizzas and charming neighborhood vibes. There's his famous chicken cutlet that's not to be missed, along with 5-star apps (think arancini, the perfect ravioli with ricotta, egg yolk and black truffle, plus a smorgasbord of veggie options like broccolini, sprouts and beets with labne), but it's really all about the pastas. The malloreddus with shrimp, Calabrian chili and breadcrumbs is out-of-this-world good, as is the radiatore with guanciale, chili, pecorino. Don't sleep on the osso bucco or center cut veal chop parm either. —Kelli Acciardo, Parade

How can we list all the good restaurants in NYC? It’s impossible! To narrow it down, we’d suggest checking out a compilation list like this one HERE.

If you’re looking for a taste of the local fare after spending time with Hank in Jamaica Bay or Rockaway Beach, he insists on head to Taco Beach.
He states, “There is a taco place about 2 blocks from where I launch and it’s totally famous. When it first opened it was just a hole in the wall and people would wait around the block to get tacos there. Now they have a whole bar, a locker for surf gear to keep it there while you eat, it’s a really interesting place to hang out after spending time on the water.”
Sounds like the place to go! For more information about Taco Beach, be sure to ask Hank after getting off the water!New Jersey
