Primary among them are the beautiful lakes to explore on your SUP.

In total, Orlando and the immediate areas around the city have an estimated number of over 70 lakes.

Each lake has its own unique beauty and surrounding area to experience.

-Perfect Paddles Travel Brief-

Best Time of Year to Visit:

Orlando is one of those few places that can be visited year-round. Whether you go in the heat of summer and enjoy the water parks, or during the winter for a fun time around the city in 60-70 degree weather, Orlando can be enjoyed at any time.

However, some of the best times to travel to Orlando include: Mid-January through mid-February (Before President's Weekend) Late-February through early March Late August through mid-November Weekdays from late-November to early January.

Wind and Weather and Where/When to Paddle

Since Orlando is situated in Central Florida, predictions on the wind can vary. Often they depend on storms that might be coming off the west or east coasts. However, to SUP in Orlando during the calmest times it is recommended that you go early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Special Note: Hurricane season is official June 1st - November 30th Florida and the general region. Even though hurricanes may dissipate before they reach land they can still impact your paddling experience. Always refer to a wind and weather app before heading onto the water - or talk with a local paddling professional or outfitter to gain insider knowledge on the area.

Average Temperature/Seasons:

Orlando has a pretty consistent temperature throughout the year. During the summer months for SUP in Orlando, the average daily high temperature hovers around 85-90°F with a low reaching around 70°F in the winter to 95°F  at peak summer months. Potential Water Hazards

The waters in Orlando are predominantly lakes. This can mean the paddling environments can remain stable. You won’t find yourself battling currents or tides. Lake paddling is typically a fun afternoon on a calm body of water.

Before you decide to drop into the water, follow this simple checklist to make sure you and your paddling buddies are safe throughout your experience (source):

1. WEAR A PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE (PFD)!

Florida law requires a readily accessible Coast Guard approved PFD for each occupant. Children younger than six years-old are required to wear a PFD.

2. Know the waterway conditions and be aware of water levels and currents.

Winds can significantly affect the difficulty of a trip. Under normal conditions, allow a minimum of two miles per hour paddling time.

3. FILE A FLOAT PLAN AND LEAVE IT WITH A RELIABLE PERSON.

A float plan contains information about your trip in the event that you do not return as scheduled. This includes a description of the vessel(s), names of all paddlers, planned course and stops, and an estimated time of return. Ask the person to notify the Coast Guard or local authorities if you do not return as scheduled. Don't forget to get in touch with your contact person and let them know when you return

4. Bring plenty of food and water.

Drinks should be in non-breakable containers . Food and gear should be stored in watertight containers. For day trips, 1/2 gallon of water per person is recommended. For overnight trips, one gallon of water per person each day is recommended.

5. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent.

Wear sunglasses, a hat, and long sleeves and pants even on cloudy days. Long sleeves and pants also help prevent insect bites.

6. Watch for motorboats.

Stay on the right and turn into the boat's wake. Respect anglers by giving them plenty of room.

7. Bring a cell phone or VHF radio.

Cell phones are great for staying in communication, but coverage may be sporadic depending on your specific location.

8. Respect wildlife.

Do not approach or harass wildlife, as they can be dangerous. It is also illegal to feed them.

Occasionally you might see American gators in the waterways. To avoid any dangerous run-ins, it’s always best to stick to areas with higher boat traffic. Gators (and other dangerous wildlife) are much more likely to be in areas where the water is calm and undisturbed.

Most gators will stay away from anything that is bigger than them. If you are paddling a 10 '6' board’ up to a 14’ board you will likely scare off any smaller ones. If you happen to see a large gator in the area, calmly paddle away from it without making any loud noises or extra splashing motions.

Always be on the lookout when paddling in Florida!

Where to See Manatees

One of the highlights of SUP in Orlando is a chance to paddle with a large number of manatees. In fact, if you arrive at the correct time of year, you are almost guaranteed to see manatees in the water.

The best location for manatee paddling is in Blue Springs State Park. For a guided tour of the park, we recommend contacting Epic Paddle Adventures. They have been running manatee tours for years and will make sure you find them on the water.

If, however, you have your own board, or you'd rather paddle solo, the manatees are attracted to Blue Spring between November and March because its constant 72-degree water is warm compared to the rest of the surrounding waters. Head there during this time and you will see hundreds of manatees gathering to enjoy the warm waters!

Orlando Lakes SUP Launch Locations

Winter Park Chain of Lakes

One of the area’s best kept secrets for SUP in Orlando happens to be the Winter Park Chain of Lakes. Full of Venetian-style canals that are only accessible by water, they connect Lake Virginia, Lake Mizell, Lake Osceola, Lake Maitland, Lake Nina and Lake Minnehaha.

The canals are lined with vegetation and beautiful homes so you’re likely to never be bored no matter where you decide to drop in.

Lake Virginia to Lake Mizell to Lake Osceola

There are two public launches for your SUP with parking. One is loathed at Dinky Dock on Lake Virginia in Winter Park, and the other is located at Fort Maitland Park in Maitland.

Out of the two launch locations we recommend Dinky Dock. It has a nice beach entry with a swimming area, boat ramp, public dock, and beautiful cypress trees. In addition, it's nestled within historic Rollins College and is a family friendly area.

On the water you’re likely to see plenty of birds, lush scenery, private homes and historic estates.

One word of caution - there are boats and jet skis on the lake so be mindful when on the open areas. When on the canals, you are going to want to stick to the sides. There might be some boat traffic there too. As always, use your discretion.

From Dinky Dock Park you will start your paddling excursion in Lake Virginia. Here it can get crowded due to the boat ramp and other watercraft launch location.

If you’re up for an expedition you can easily make it into Lake Osceola through Fern Canal. On Lake Osceola you should be able to see the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Garden. Keep it in the back of your mind to visit as you continue along the canals.

Connecting Lake Osceola and Lake Maitland is the Venetian Canal. This is the longest and most scenic canal in Winter Park. It’s quite a long paddle so be prepared before you decide to head this far.

We don’t recommend heading any farther from here though. Instead, head back to Dinky Docks. If you want to paddle the other lakes in the Chain the following day, we recommend taking the evening off and heading to the other launch location in the morning.

SUP in Orlando

Lake Maitland to Lake Nina to Lake Minnehaha

Our second tour through the Winter Park Chain of Lakes takes us to Fort Maitland Park.

The park has restrooms, picnic areas, and easy access to parking for the entire day. In addition, there is a small beach area that does require a bit of carry for your SUP but offers an easy launch location even for the beginner.

Once you launch onto the water, you’re officially paddling on Lake Maitland. If you need a break or would like to stop before heading to Lake Nina, there is a small beach island right in the middle of the lake called Dog Island that is difficult to miss.

From there keep heading north until you hit the canal to Lake Nina. This is the smallest lake out of the six connected chains in Winter Park. You can stay here for a bit if you choose or keep heading right to our last location in Lake Minnehaha.

You’ll head underneath a bridge which is a bike path and part of the Maitland Bike Route. Once under the bridge you’ll be in Lake Minnehaha. The beautiful lake is full of lily pads and surrounded by residential homes. Explore the shore before heading back to your launch location. Once you return, you’ll be right back in the center of the city with plenty of choices for a bite to eat and relax!

SUP in Orlando

Wekiwa Springs State Park

Our first location also happens to be one of Central Florida’s most popular places to visit. It is also a favorite place for beginners as the waters are calm and easy to paddle.

You start at the spring’s boil and as you paddle along the route you’ll be immersed in the beautiful setting you find yourself in. Underneath a canopy of trees you’ll move through lily pad-lined waters and fallen trees. You’re likely to see turtles, herons and maybe even a small alligator here or there. Don’t be frightened though! They’re likely to scurry off before you even notice them.

One bonus of paddling at Wekiwa Springs - if you paddle far enough you’re likely to end up at the popular bar Wekiva Island. This is a great place to take a break, grab a drink or a bite to eat, and relax until it’s time to head back.

SUP in Orlando

Blue Springs State Park

If you want to paddle in the Orlando area and want to do it with manatees, Blue Springs State Park should be your choice for a launch location.

During the colder months, which is the optimal time to visit Orlando when the weather isn’t stifling hot, the manatees in the area will migrate to the springs inside the state park. The water temperatures here stay a consistent 72 degrees all year long - making for the perfect environment for manatees to gather to stay warm and happy. When the surrounding temperatures drop during the winter it’s not unusual to see hundreds of them congregating here to stay warm. Time it just right and you’ll be able to see them from atop your SUP!

Just be sure to give them enough room. It is their home after all.

SUP in Orlando

Lake Eola Park

Do you want to see beautiful views of Orlando’s downtown from your paddle board? If so, head to Lake Eola Park. Even though the lake is tiny, it’s still a great place for an easy paddle. The calm surface makes it ideal for beginners who are just getting started in SUP. Or as a great spot to catch the sunset before grabbing a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant.

You can also practice SUP yoga or simply float, relax, and sunbathe for a fun way to take a break and recover on the water while you SUP in Orlando.

Lake Holden

Lake Holden is located just 10 minutes drive from downtown. And the spot is blissful. Due to it being surrounded by homes in a residential park of the city, you’re likely not to find a large crowd on the water, unless it’s the height of the summer. Then, you’ll be paddling with the locals.

Even still, this is a close lake and its big enough to find your own space to have fun while you SUP in Orlando.

Lake Ivanhoe Park

Lake Ivanhoe Park is situated in the center of a shopping village. You might be thinking, “Why would I want to paddle in the middle of a shopping village?” Because why not?

The lake itself is quiet, calm, and perfect for beginners to experience SUP in the middle of a big city. And it’s big enough to find seclusion yet small enough to explore the entire thing. And while it may not have the same wildlife feature of our previous launch locations, it makes up for it with convenience. Especially if you want to do some shopping along with paddling during your stay in Orlando.

SUP in Orlando

Silver Springs State Park

Another hot spot for manatee sightings happens to be SIlver Springs State Park.

To some, Silver Springs has been described as going back in time to that of the Jurassic. The wild forests, the ultra clear water, the abundance of wildlife, make for a magical time reconnecting with nature in close proximity to the big city of Orlando.

And if you time your visit just right, you’re likely to see the gentle giants local to Florida’s shores - the manatee. Through the clear waters when the weather is warm and the water is too, they often congregate in Silver Springs park because of its quiet shores and untouched waterways.

As always, make sure you respect their space if you happen upon a bunch of them. And be sure to take your cell phone with you in a dry case to snap as many pictures as possible!
